Last night's sketch of Jupiter. I was only using a little 90mm Maksutov at x125.... Well pleased with the amount of detail this little scope shows. I've used 8 inch telescopes that show less detail! Can highly recommend Maksutovs.

Nice one Mark. One day you'll have to show me how you do it !!! ......better still - show the group.

Thanks Mike.... :-)
No problem about demonstrating the sketching. Mars would be my choice for first time sketching.
Mars will be 19 arc seconds for the first part of September, and still a good target for small telescopes, perhaps a Mars sketching session could be arranged in the September meeting.
My old 4.5 inch Tal reflector would easily pick out detail down to 12 arc seconds.
N.B Tomorrow night at 22h35m UT there will be a central transit of the Great Red Spot, fingers crossed.

You are pencilled in and will confirm in a day or two - thanks for that.
Incidentally many will be interested in this for later in June:
Jupiter- Telescopes show the shadow transit of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede from 22:00 to 23:50 BST on June 18th [20cm telescope or larger}

I think to make a sketch you need some aptitude for drawing, so that definitely excludes me.

Last night or rather early evening I saw venus as usual in the west but for the life of me couldn't spot Jupiter and thought someone had nicked it but then realised it was cloud cover which was obscuring it. Hopefully many more clearer nights to come.

Hi Richard, I'll be over for the September meeting, and will bring along some of my planet sketching blanks, they make sketching a lot easier for beginners.
I'll explain more when we meet up....
