After observing Venus for a short while, I decided to grab the little 70mm x 300 and have a crack at Saturn and Jupiter, Saturn was still a bit low in the sky and I only managed to see the large gap in the rings the second ring can be seen as a rule with a 6 eyepiece with this scope, I had a similar problem with Jupiter all 4 Moons showed up well, but could not see any surface details, again usually visible with this scope, I put this down to a thin layer of cloud. The Moon on the other hand fairly low and a light covering with cloud showed quite a lot of detail contrasted by the cloud giving a yellow colour and not so bright as to need a filter.
A quick edit, popped out again at 01.20 Mars on its way up but still a bit to low and a bit two much atmosphere for a good view, still 4 planets and 5 moons logged up tonight.

Saw Mars around 3.30 - glowing like an ember in the southern sky and it will improve in July !!
Amazing to think that, even now, it is as bright as Jupiter.
That doesn't happen often

Had a look out upstairs window at 0400 and moon low and very bright but then something caught my eye just showing through a tiny gap in the large tree to the south. instantly recognised as mars .
