The solar funnel showed no solar activity but according to spaceweather .com there is one very small spot - AR2716. Even blowing up the picture on the website it is miniscule so no chance of solar flares!!

This raises a question I have yet to get someone to answer.Is AR2716 and other similar numbers refer to a grid reference on the face of the sun?If so how does one work it out?Answers here please and not on a postcard.

Hi Jim, the AR2716 is not a grid reference, it's just the number designated for that particular active sunspot region. If you happened to observe the newest active region that came along ; after AR2716, then it would be called AR2717... etc..
