Got a couple of reasonable photos (by my standards), of the conjunction, but files are too big to upload, over 3.5mb. Any advice on how to make files smaller than 1mb would be appreciated

Convert them to Jpegs will reduce the size. nice to hear you've got the imaging bug, regards, Phil

you can also use paint.net (free software) to resize the image, www.getpaint.net/open the file in the program and select image/resize from the top and type in your preferred size to the dialogue boxes, for online display I generally use a max dimension of 1000 pixels to the longest side. Saving as a jpg will also help though I usually use png if the file size will allow it.
